Introduction
Bess Rogers came to my attention as a result of being deemed similar to Jenny Owen Youngs and Allison Weiss per the last.fm algorithm. In truth I was slow to allow Bess to inch her way into my favorite artists, but seeing her live with Rachel Platten in DC a few months ago was more than enough to push me over the top. Bess has gained even more status as one of my favorite artists as a direct result of her newest album “Out of the Ocean” which showed even greater range, emotion, and pure humanity then I had experienced out of Bess in the past.
Who is Bess Rogers?
In Bess’ short life she has managed to achieve quite a lot. Bess holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in studio composition from SUNY Purchase. She’s released several successful albums and has really made a name for herself in the New York music scene. Furthermore her music has been featured in a variety of TV Shows and recently Bess was afforded to write the jingle for Motts which was well received by fans of Bess and juice alike!
Musical Style
Bess has an interesting music style. I suppose the super short answer would be indie folk pop. Bess’ music is both deep and accessible and bounces between being fast pop love ballads to songs of heartbreak and pain and everything in between. With her newest release Bess pushes this to a whole new level by introducing some minor electronic influence, playing more of the instruments she loves so much, and more than ever before making sure that the audience feels whatever emotion she is as they experience her music.
Other Stuff
Firstly what my readers have to understand is that Bess is one of the sweetest people you will ever meet after a show. Her eyes really light up when she meets fans both old and new, and she is always happy to talk about her music, set, life, or whatever else happens to come up. Beyond that Bess really is a joy to watch live. I was fortunate enough to experience her on stage chemistry with the lovely Rachel Platten and it was all together just a fun (and funny) show.
New album
I have no intention of doing a full album review here, but considering all the hype I’ve put to you all surrounding Bess’s new release I feel obligated to share that whatever excitement you have built up for yourself is not at all misplaced. Bess is still one of the most talented independent artists I have ever had the good fortune to meet and I have thoroughly enjoyed having Bess’ album on repeat for the last few days. While“Standing tall”, “Anchor”, “Math and Science”, and “Water and Dirt” were the standouts to me, the entire album flows with a precision and beauty that you often cannot get from independent artists, and yet Bess handles this with a great amount of talent and pulls together my favorite album from her yet.
I hope many of my readers go give Bess’ album a listen and support this powerful independent artist as she continues to evolve and grow.
Happy Listening,
Dom
